5 Interview Tips For Personal Trainers

Job interviews are both exciting and anxiety-inducing at the same time: Landing one means you’ve made it into the "yes" pile, but it also means preparing for those all-too-familiar questions about your strengths, your weaknesses, you know the drill.

As a newly-qualified Personal Trainer, these tips will help you feel more prepared to tackle your interview head on.

Research the company, it’s a must!

Familiarise yourself with the background of the company, how they operate, how long they have been in operation, their core values and mission statement. This will also help you decipher whether you think you will fit in there.

Prepare your docs!

Think; do you have a business plan to take, even if it is just a rough idea. Make sure it is presented well and not just folded and put in your pocket. If they have requested to see Certificates for your Personal Trainer qualifications, make sure these are in a presentation folder. First impressions count!

Make sure your outfit is clean, smart, fits well and is professional. This also goes for your gym kit, as you may be asked to demonstrate a practical exercise during your interview. As a Personal Trainer, you’re representing both yourself and your employed.

Practical Demonstrations

During your interview you may be asked to either put together a plan for a client or demonstrate an exercise, it’s a good idea to go over different exercise and meal plans so you are not caught out by this element of the interview, however it is not always asked of you.

Ask questions!

Make sure you have some questions to take with you. There are a few example questions below, make your questions interesting and make sure you find out everything you need to know should you be offered the position.

  • Show an interest in the interviewer and ask what they enjoy most about their role or how they started their fitness career.
  • How many Personal Trainers are currently working on the gym floor and on average how many personal training sessions do they deliver each week?
  • Ask what the scope there is for progression within the gym/company
  • At the end of the interview you should ask the interviewer how they think you did or if there is anything they are unsure of, this gives you chance to get rid of any doubt the interviewer may have before you leave.

Here are some questions you may also be asked, it is a good idea to think how you would answer them:

  • Name 3 strengths and 1 weakness, ensure that you can always turn the weakness into a positive.
  • What is your unique selling point?
  • Where do you see yourself in 3 years’ time?
