As a successful personal trainer, you’ll be doing everything you can to ensure that you, your clients and any employees you have are safe during sessions. However, even when taking the utmost care and attention, accidents can still happen.

For this reason, having specialist personal trainer insurance is essential to protect you and your business against costly compensation claims if something goes wrong.

Insure4Sport, the UK’s most trusted provider of personal trainer insurance, outlines some of the main reasons you need it.

Injury to another person and property damage

Most personal trainers do everything they can to keep their clients safe during sessions – however, things can still go wrong.

You might demonstrate a deadlift to a client and they could subsequently injure themselves by lifting too heavy a weight, holding you responsible and making a claim against you for their injuries.

They could also inadvertently damage gym equipment during one of your sessions and you could be held accountable.

If either of these things happen, you could be left out of pocket if you didn’t have Public Liability insurance. This protects you if a claim is made against you for injury to another person or property damage at the venue you use to train.

It’s no wonder, therefore, that most gyms and sports centres require proof of Public Liability insurance before even allowing you to work on the gym floor.

At Insure4Sport, we offer up to £10m of Public Liability insurance, depending on your requirements. This includes up to £1 million Professional Indemnity cover, which covers you if a client suffers an injury following incorrect advice or instructions you’ve given.

Loss, theft or damage of equipment

As personal trainers, you rely on a range of valuable equipment to ensure your clients receive the best possible service.

However, despite taking the utmost care of your equipment, it could be lost, damaged or stolen. For instance, it could be stolen while you’re in the middle of a client session, or your car containing your personal training equipment could be stolen.

It could be that you’re training an inexperienced client and they may accidentally damage your equipment.

Instances like these are why you need Sports Equipment cover, to compensate you if your equipment is lost, stolen or damaged.

With Insure4Sport you can cover up to £50,000 of Sports Equipment, with a maximum value for one item of £2,500. With our Sports Equipment cover, you can get a brand new, like-for-like replacement for equipment that’s less than a year old, if your claim is successful.

Injury to yourself

It’s not just injury to another person that could disrupt your personal training career without the right cover. Accidents can happen to you, even if you’re an experienced professional.

It could be that you tear a bicep, resulting in surgery and physiotherapy, or in more extreme cases you could suffer broken bones or be unable to train for an extended period.

That’s why it makes sense to protect yourself with Personal Accident cover. Insure4Sport’s Personal Accident cover provides up to £50,000 which can cover the cost of physiotherapy or dental treatment (up to £500 and £250 respectively). It also includes compensation in the event of accidental death, permanent disablement, broken bones, loss of limbs or loss of sight from an accident during a session.

If you take out our Personal Accident cover, you can also add Loss of Earnings cover, which supports you financially if you’re unable to work for a period of time.

Should you find yourself out of work for more than 14 days, you can claim Loss of Earnings for up to £750 a week for up to 52 weeks.

Injury to your employees

If you employ staff as part of your personal trainer or fitness instructor business, you could be on the receiving end of a potentially costly compensation claim if they injure themselves and hold you responsible.

For this reason, you’re legally required to take out Employers’ Liability insurance if you employ staff.

Our Employers’ Liability cover enables you to pay compensation to one of your employees if they get injured or suffer an illness whilst working for you, whether this happens on or off site.
